The Apollo (Shiner) media processor SoCs from Trident Microsystems are complete media processor devices that need very little external circuitry to form a complete system. In addition to IPTV applications they can be used for satellite or cable set-top box (STB) systems. Full 1080p 60 Hz decode of H264 encoded content can be performed, or with a MDS-developed extension 16 channels of standard definition (480i/576i) content can be decoded and output. This mode is typically used in security applications.

An ARM Cortex A9 core, with a PowerVR 3D GPU, forms the general-purpose processing section of the device and is where user application development takes place. A TriMedia TMCONFIG VLIW core (450 MHz) is available and can be used for custom audio or video processing.

The device offers a wide range of standard interfaces for connectivity: Ethernet, USB, I2C, SPI, SDCard, SATA, and serial ports are all standard. Parts in the Apollo / Shiner series for Media Processing are the PNX8400 and PNX8401, which are equivalent to the PNX8492 and PNX8493.

MDS has significant experience with all aspects of the PNX84xx series and can assist product development efforts at a variety of levels of support.

Pictured below is a typical IPTV platform based on the PNX84xx.
